In January 2019, Nigeria’s biotech regulatory agency, the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), approved the environmental release of GM cowpea (beans) – the first genetically modified (GM) food crop to be approved in Nigeria. This decision marks the beginning of the commercialization process. According to the director-general of NBMA, Dr. Rufus Ebegba, it could take about one year before the seed comes into the market. In the meantime, we recommend that you reach out to your local seed provider for further information.

You might be interested to hear that in addition to GM cowpea, just this month Nigeria approved two GMO cotton varieties. The approved cotton types are genetically modified to overcome bollworm and are intended to help farmers boost supply and cut lint imports.

We hope this answers your question, if you have any other questions about GMOs or biotechnology, please ask!
