GM crops on the market today have the same nutrition and composition as non-GM crops. Therefore, GMOs have no effect on the human body. Connie Diekman, Med, RD, D, FADA, explains in a response to a similar question. Read the full response.

“The Food and Drug Administration has set forth guidelines related to the use of GMOs, and in those documents they reference the science that indicates food developed through biotechnology are digested in the same manner as other foods and therefore provide the same nutrition.”

We hope this answers your question, if you have any other questions about GMOs or biotechnology, please ask!

Q: What Does GMO Stand For?

Answered by Community Manager - May 07, 2018

A: When people refer to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), they are referring to precision plant breeding using genetic engineering. It allows plant breeders to take a desirable trait (like resistance to drought, insects, weeds, and disease) from one plant or organism and transfer it to the plant they want to improve, as well as make a change to an existing trait in a plant they are developing. You may have also heard of agricultural biotechnology or biotech seeds. These are terms that may be used to refer to the same thing – a genetically modified organism (GMO) [...]

A: Keith Reding, Biotech Regulatory Policy Lead at Monsanto, explains how Roundup Ready was developed in a similar question that was asked. “Roundup Ready sugar beets H7-1 was developed by first making a piece of DNA, called an expression cassette, that contains the cp4 epsps gene for tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate, which is the active ingredient in Roundup agricultural herbicides. Using genetic-engineering techniques, that expression cassette is spliced into a plasmid and transformed into Agrobacterium…” Read more detail and watch a video of soybean genetic modif [...]
