Biotech crops have been tested and consumed globally for many years. They are as safe as conventional crops and their economic and environmental benefits have proven to be superior. They are not a single solution “silver bullet” for meeting our agricultural needs, but they are certainly important tools for addressing the challenge of supporting a growing global population and are critical to the sustainability of agriculture so that future generations can meet their needs. As such, these crops are very important for consumers.
GE food and feed products are the most extensively tested and regulated in the entire food sector. Testing by independent public authorities and scientists throughout the world, including national and international food standards bodies, continues to demonstrate that approved GE plants are just as safe as conventional varieties.
There is widespread agreement from scientists and international health organizations that biotech crops, foods, and feeds are as safe as conventionally-bred crops, foods, and feeds. Over 3,200 renowned scientists worldwide have signed a declaration in support of agricultural biotechnology (www.agbioworld.org) and its safety to humans, animals, and the environment. Some international food safety organizations have even concluded that because of the strict regulatory oversight of biotech crops, they are probably even safer than conventional crops and foods.
All farmers should be able to choose the best available technologies and products, including biotech crops, to meet their crop production needs in a sustainable way.
Information on genetically modified (GM) technology and the benefits it can bring through open dialogue can be found in many reputable and independent organizations, such as Crop Life International and the Council for Biotechnology Information. They provide accurate and impartial information on the safety and benefits of GM technology. Other organizations that also provide information include the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications and the Biotechnology Industry Organization.
