Food manufacturers are working to meet a growing demand by consumers interested in additional information about food products and the process through which plant-based ingredients are grown. This includes providing information about whether or not food ingredients were derived from genetically engineered plants. Food manufacturers certify and label some products as non-GMO to provide product options for consumers that wish to avoid genetically engineered food. It is important to point out, that as of this writing, the United States Congress has not established a consistent, national labeling standard for food ingredients produced through biotechnology. Consequently, state governments and third party organizations have established separate definitions and standards. Enacting a national definition and standard for genetic engineering and food labeling would improve product transparency by enabling manufacturers to provide consumers with consistent, accurate and meaningful information.
