While it is certainly possible to genetically modify a plant to harm either humans or animals that consume it, there are currently no genetically modified plants that do. In fact, all crops meant for consumption have been tested and have been shown to be safe. When genetically modifying a plant, the researcher knows exactly what gene is being inserted into the plant. These inserted genes are meant to increase the crops’ durability or add health benefits to the crop.

Some genetically modified plants were created solely to improve the health of those who consume it. Golden rice is a perfect example of this. In many areas of the world where rice is the staple food, children have a vitamin A deficiency. This deficiency leads to thousands of deaths each year. Golden rice was genetically modified to synthesize vitamin A. Unfortunately, the regions that need this crop have faced significant opposition to its implementation.
