There is currently one GMO animal product approved for consumption – the AquAdvantage Salmon (GMO salmon), which will be coming to market soon. In this post we provide the nine things you need to know about GMO Salmon. You can also read about this new GMO Salmon and the FDA’s approval process here.

Expert Caitlin Cooper, Ph.D. Candidate at the University of California, Davis, explains how genetically modifying salmon is similar to genetically modifying plants in the following piece:

“In both cases, a gene that is intended to result in a new, desirable trait is inserted into the genome of the plant or animal, the gene provides the information to make a protein and the protein results in a new or enhanced trait.  One difference involves the similarity of the new protein to the proteins produced by the target.”

There are also GMO animals used for the bio-production of pharmaceuticals and for laboratory research.  Yvonne Badke, former Senior Biometrician in the Breeding Research group at Bayer CropScience, explains some benefits of possible GM animals. She states, “Many of the GM animal products are expected to be used for pharmaceuticals, rather than through the food chain.” Read her full response here.
