ARTICLE: It’s time to trust genetically modified crops and their place in agriculture
The following is an excerpt of editorial from the Greeley (Co.) Tribune about the safety of genetically modified organisms (GMOs.)
We believe genetically modified crops are a part of the future of agriculture. We even believe that one day, sooner than we think, we may rely on them.
Therefore, we don't understand why people continue to be afraid of them.
Oh, we know why. Social media is the perfect place for the fear mongering and misinformation spread about the crops, what many like to call GMOs.
You don't have to have any kind of facts, after all, to write posts about how GMOs cause deformities or cancer or lead to problems with vaccinations. And for some reason, writing a post on, say, Facebook gives these kinds of paranoid thoughts more legitimacy than they deserve.
This came up just a few days ago at the Colorado Farm Show when a panel of farmers and agriculture experts expressed frustrations at the public's increased skepticism of science. We think social media has a lot to do with that.
The truth, at least as we see it, is we need science. The population will continue to grow, and as they do, the amount of land where they can stay will continue to shrink.
We've already seen many examples in Weld County of cropland being turned into homes. That means fewer acres to grow the food to feed all these people.
