Dr. Gabe Middleton is a partner at Orrville Veterinary Clinic, a 13 doctor mixed animal practice in northeast Ohio. His primary focus is on large animal medicine and surgery. Dr. Middleton currently serves as president of the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST) and the Ohio Dairy Veterinarians Group. He is fortunate enough to work with a progressive group of dairy clients. He is able to see firsthand the benefits of biotechnology on plant health, animal health, and the environment. Dr. Middleton is a graduate of The College of Wooster (B.A.) and The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

A: There are many ingredients in livestock feeds. The most common ingredients that might be genetically modified (GM) crops are corn, soybeans, and alfalfa hay. The safety of these feeds being fed to livestock has been evaluated in hundreds of studies with no adverse effects on animal health. The percentage of actual genetically modified DNA ingested by the animal is extremely small, much less than 1 percent of their total intake.
