Professor & Robinson Chair in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at U.C. Berkeley
I am a Professor who holds the Robinson Chair in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at U.C. Berkeley. My areas of expertise include agricultural and environmental policy, the economics of innovation, risk and marketing, and water, pest control; biotechnology and climate change. I am a Fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) and the Association of Environmental and Resource economics (AERE) and am the recipient of the 2000 Cannes Water and the Economy Award. I won the AAEA 2002 and 2007 Quality of Research Discovery Award and the 2005 and 2009 AAEA Publication of Enduring quality award. I edited 17 books and coauthored over 300 papers in refereed journals. I received my B. A. in Economics and Statistics at Tel Aviv University, Israel, and my Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1979. I have served as a consultant to the World Bank, FAO, USDA, EPA, and CDFA. I have also served as Department Chair from 1994 to1999, and was on the boards of the AAEA and C-FARE and on three NRC panels.
I am married to Leorah Abouav-Zilberman, have 3 children (Shie, Eyal and Aytan), and 5 adorable grandchildren. I am the codirector of the BEAHRS Environmental Leadership Program in UC Berkeley. I am the Faculty Director of the Master of Development Practice.

A: There are proofs that GMO varieties reduced the price of all the major crops that use them. There are many estimates of these price savings, which are quite consistent. A study in the prestigious Journal of Economic Perspectives by Barrows, Sexton and Zilberman (see below), estimates that on average the GMO contributed to 13 percent decline in the price of corn, 33 percent decline in the price of cotton and 34 percent decline in the price of soybean in 2010.
