Bt brinjal is as safe as conventional brinjal. Before any GMO crop can be grown for commercial production and used for food or feed, it must undergo extensive testing for scientists to understand whether it is as safe as its conventional counterpart. This testing is conducted according to internationally accepted standards and follows data-quality requirements mandated by the agency reviewing the product. Bt brinjal has been tested in these studies (Biosafety Dada of Bt Brinjal), and they show that its composition is not meaningfully different from conventional brinjal; the protein that protects Bt brinjal from insect damage is not an allergen and is not toxic to humans or livestock. These studies also demonstrate that the environmental risk of Bt brinjal to nontarget organisms is negligible. Taken together, all the data and information regarding Bt brinjal demonstrate that it is as safe for cultivation and consumption as conventional brinjal.
