I am dating myself here, but I think the best, and potentially most entertaining, explanation about how our federal laws are made is still Schoolhouse Rock’s I’m Just a Bill. 

The Coalition for Safe and Affordable Food is supporting a process to establish federal, uniform standards for voluntary GMO labeling: : 

• H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015, was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives on July 23rd of this year. You can read more about H.R. 1599 here and here. 
• The Senate Agriculture Committee has scheduled a hearing to discuss the safety of agricultural biotechnology (GMOs) for October 21.
