GMOs are safe for the human body. In the spring of 2016, The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NAS) researched this very same question and concluded: Yes, GMOs are safe. According to this response, “the overwhelming consensus of scientific experts and major scientific authorities around the world, including the World Health Organization, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and the American Medical Association have ruled that GMOs are safe.”

In the spring of 2016, The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NAS) issued a comprehensive report where a panel of more than 20 scientists, researchers, agricultural and industry experts reviewed over 20 years of data since GMOs were introduced, including nearly 900 studies and tests and European and North American health data. They concluded – as other previous research concluded – that genetically modified crops are safe to eat, have the same nutrition and composition as non-genetically modified crops and have no links to new allergies, cancer, celiac or other diseases.

Extensive and continued studies on GMOs are being conducted to ensure their ongoing safety. In addition to the NAS analysis, there are thousands of studies available confirming the safety of GMOs, as well as hundreds of independent studies.”

Many consumers are led to believe that GMOs can cause cancer, autism, gluten intolerance and other illnesses. However, this is far from the truth. Every leading health organization in the world stands behind the safety of GMOs.

The below infographic details how more than 20 scientists, researchers, agricultural and industry experts reviewed over 20 years of data since GMOs were introduced, including nearly 900 studies and publications, animal studies, allergenicity testing and North American and European health data.

Connie Diekman, Med, RD, D, FADA, explains the effects of GMOs on the human body in one of her responses to a similar question. Read the full response.

“First, the Food and Drug Administration has set forth guidelines related to the use of GMOs, and in those documents they reference the science that indicates food developed through biotechnology are digested in the same manner as other foods and therefore provide the same nutrition, or in some cases more nutrition (if the goal of the biotechnology was to enhance nutrient content). The science also indicates that these foods are safe for consumption and that they are not contributors to increased allergies.”

Bruce Chassy, Professor Emeritus of Food Safety and Nutritional Sciences, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, explains the longest study done on how GMOs affect the longevity and overall health of human beings in his response here.
