Question

Your site says you solicit answers from experts across a wide range of disciplines in order to provide consumers with balanced, factbased responses to their questions. I have yet to find an answer to any of the questions asked, that is in any way critical of GM. Does this mean that there are no valid criticisms, or is this primarily an advocacy site?

GMO Answers was created to do a better job answering your questions about GMOs and biotechnology in agriculture. While the biotech industry stands 100 percent behind the health and safety of the GM crops on the market today, we acknowledge that we haven’t done the best job communicating about them. You can read more about the purpose and goals of GMO Answers here.

A variety of independent and company experts do answer questions on GMO Answers, in order to provide consumers with evidence-based information. GMO Answers is not intended to be an advocacy site, but a forum where people can ask tough questions, be skeptical and become part of an open conversation about how our food is grown.

As part of that open conversation, the experts who contribute to the site have identified the advantages, disadvantages, and appropriate applications of genetic engineering and plant biotechnology as technologies used in agriculture. For example, you can read about some of the common criticisms of GM crops in this response by Rob Wager from Vancouver Island University. Also, Arthur Caplan, Drs. William F and Virginia Connolly Mitty Professor and Founding Head of the Division of Bioethics at New York Langone Medical Center offers discussion on bioethics, including the philosophy that humans can do things better than nature and whether genetic modification is “playing God.” You can also read commentary about resistant weeds here.

We invite you to continue asking questions, and welcome any feedback you may have about GMO Answers.
