Question

What actions do or should GMO companies such as Monsanto take to show society they are only going to contribute to the world of food, and not limit it? I read an article stating Monsanto executives hope to see 100 GMO in the market in 100 years.

Monsanto has pledged to work with others to deliver sustainable agricultural solutions that address our biggest challenges — things like climate change and resource conservation — while sustaining the environment, and we are committed to bringing a broad range of solutions to farmers all over the world. Please visit Discover.Monsanto.com for additional information on how we are helping farmers produce food more sustainably, and on our part in the food conversation. One other point that I would like to highlight is that Monsanto is only part of the food value chain, and in no way in control of how all foods find their way to our store shelves and plates. In fact, our global market share of the world’s seeds is less than 5 percent. More information on our share in the GM market for seeds can be reviewed here.

By 2050, we will have added another 2 billion people (equivalent to two Chinas) to this planet, and all 9 billion will need to eat. Even more important, the food available should be safe, nutritious, affordable and grown in a sustainable way. Our belief is that everyone should have access to a balanced meal; to me, that is contributing to the world of food and not limiting it.

  • We produce seeds for fruits, vegetables and key crops — such as corn, soybeans and cotton — that help farmers have better harvests while using water and other important resources more efficiently.

  • We also work to find sustainable solutions for soil health, help farmers use data to improve farming practices and conserve natural resources, and provide crop protection products to minimize damage from pests and diseases.

  • Through programs and partnerships, we collaborate with farmers, researchers, nonprofit organizations, universities and others to help tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges.

I am not familiar with this statement you are referencing, “100 GMO in the market in 100 years.” GMO crops are just one of the tools that Monsanto and others are using to make agriculture more efficient.

There is no single solution to these challenges, and no single company or organization has all the answers.
