Question

Where are the results from the studies that have proven that GMOs are safe? When can we see them and have them evaluated by our own scientists? From what I understand, Monsanto is responsible for testing them and for having their studies verified by so-called independent scientists, however these studies are protected by intellectual property laws and are never published. So, how do we really know?

There are hundreds of publicly available independent and industry studies that have been performed on GMOs and have confirmed their safety.

We have been active in publishing study results and we encourage our employees to do so.  These studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, as well as presented in scientific forums as individual papers or as the entire symposium.  The topics of these studies include agronomic performance, crop composition, animal feeding studies, protein characterization and exposure, molecular characterization, allergy assessment, chemical residues, etc.  The independent scientists who review our studies include the wide array of scientists (well over 100) who work for or advise regulatory agencies around the world.  These are in addition to any scientists who would serve as peer-reviewers of articles submitted for publication in scientific journals.

From 2001 to 2009 alone, Monsanto scientists published over 700 technical documents. These technical publications are listed here.

Additionally, since 2009, more than 350 additional technical documents have been published.  We are currently updating the list of studies available on our website to document these additions.

Other biotech companies also actively publish their research and safety studies.  There are hundreds of independently funded publications as well, many of which can be found at the Biofortified website.
