Jon Giebel, PhD

Microbiology Group Leader, Bayer

Expert Bio

As the microbiology group lead for Bayer, Jon Giebel leads a team of scientists focused on isolating and culturing environmental microbes for insecticidal toxin discovery. He also works with Bayer’s Alliance Management division to identify external innovation opportunities that will benefit the global R&D pipeline.

Prior to joining Bayer in 2010, during his graduate work, Jon studied the mechanisms of Bacillus anthracis spore germination, specifically, the enzymatic process by which the spore’s outer wall is degraded, which is a critical step in pathogenesis. Additionally, Jon worked as a laboratory technician at the University of Rochester, where he studied sexual differentiation pathways in Nasonia, focusing on the double sex pathway and its evolutionary history. He also studied post-mating effects of accessory gland proteins in female Drosophila melanogaster as a Hughes Scholars undergraduate researcher at Cornell University.

Jon earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Michigan. Jonathan Giebel, Ph.D.
