GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, can be made using many different techniques. The broadest definition describes what happens anytime the DNA is “modified,” whether it is by traditional crosses between related organisms, chemical mutagenesis, radiation mutagenesis, genetic engineering or other methods. A helpful comparison of these methods can be found at Kevin Folta’s blog, Illumination.

However, when most people ask about GMOs, they are referring to plants developed using genetic engineering or recombinant DNA technology. Specific traits, such as herbicide tolerance, insect resistance or disease resistance, among others, can be added without potentially introducing other undesirable traits. The downsides/limitations of using the older breeding techniques have been discussed on GMO Answers and are linked for your review.

I answered another question about how GMOs are made using genetic engineering and used Roundup Ready sugar beets as my example. This response links to several videos showcasing the process of genetically engineering plants.
