Because there is a difference between labeling, and forced labeling. Forced labeling implies that GM foods are somehow unsafe, or inherently dangerous, when all reputable science tells us the opposite. For most uninformed Americans, just seeing a label that says GMO is enough to send them running, for no good reason. I'd check out the link posted by the community manager, as I'm sure it will answer your question more fully. The people who would really gain from GMO labeling is the organic industry. You think organics are expensive now? With ignorant Americans afraid of labels, the prices would go through the roof, and people would gladly pay up

Actually, I believe a more correct answer is that informed people do not want to eat GMOs and the companies know that, so they know that labeling them would kill their profits. If people wanted GMO foods, the companies would be rushing to the printers to label their GMO products. People don't want them, so companies oppose labeling them.

As for "reputable science" showing that GMOs are safe, that is up for debate. "Reputable science" is not so "reputable" when it comes to GMOs. There is simply too much influence from the companies who create the GMOs.
