Jennifer Bearden is the University of Florida IFAS Extension Agriculture Agent in Okaloosa County. She works with livestock, forages, row crops and some vegetable crops. Jennifer has a BS in Animal Sciences (1999) and a MAg in Agricultural Education (2002), both from the University of Florida. She is currently pursuing another Master’s degree in Agroecology from the University of Florida.

Q: If I want to start my own garden, can I buy the seeds at any nursery or gardening center?
A: Integrated pest management begins with seed and variety selection. A new gardener will want to familiarize themselves with pests that routinely affect crops in their area. A good place to start is your local extension office. Many times, we have lists of varieties that are recommended for certain areas as well as pests that are a concern. The next consideration is the source of the seed. Do you want organic seed, raw seed or treated seed? This is a personal preference based on how you will grow the vegetables.
