For the 2013-14 harvest season, 1.5 billion hectares were planted worldwide. Of this number, 12 percent, or 175 million hectares, were biotech crops, composed of approximately 18 million farmers in 27 countries. The largest GM crops include corn, soybean, canola and cotton.
